Serena Williams is one half of arguably the most famous tennis siblings of all time. But their family is one marred by tragedy, with the sister of Serena and Venus Williams brutally killed in a fatal drive-by shooting.

The shocking incident resurfaced in the aftermath of the Super Bowl LIX, which saw 43-year-old Serena going viral after making an appearance in Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show.

During the show, Serena appeared on one of the stages doing a Crip Walk dance during Kendrick’s performance of ‘Not Like Us’. A Grammy award winning song, it was created as a diss towards Kendrick’s rival Drake, who Serena was heavily rumoured to have dated between 2011 and 2015.

Viewers were left somewhat shocked by Serena doing the Crip Walk, or C-Walk, after realising the links between the dance and the gang that killed her sister.

Crip Walk explained

Created in the 1970s by Robert Jackson, known as ‘Sugar Bear’, he was a member of the Crips gang that operate out of Los Angeles.

An extremely violent street gang, with a history of murders, robberies, and dealing drugs, the dance was used by members to signify their allegiance to the Crips.

Technically difficult to execute, it requires people to intricately move their feet in quick fashion where they will usually spell out the work C-R-I-P. In a more sinister use, it has been performed by Crip gang members after they have killed a target.

It found itself way in to the rap subculture along the West Coast of the USA, with artists such as Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, and Ice Cube performing it over the years during their concerts.

Serena has opted to perform the Crip Walk on a number of occasions during her life.

After winning gold medal at the 2012 Olympics at Wimbledon, she performed the signature dance move on Centre Court with sister Venus cheering her on from the family box.

She also did it in June last year when presenting at the ESPY Awards.

“Not a single one of us, not even me, should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar,” she said in an apparent reference to her alleged ex Drake’s beef with the Compton rapper.

Serena danced the C-Walk once again at the 2025 Super Bowl in New Orleans, appearing with Kendrick during his performance of ‘Not Like Us’. Speaking about the song, she previously said: “When they play that jam, I’m jamming. That jam is jamming.”

Killing of Serena Williams’ sister and fan realisation

Following Serena’s Crip Walk performance at the Super Bowl, some viewers were alerted to the Crips connection to the Williams family through the shocking killing of Yetunde Price.

Yetunde was the half sister of Serena and Venus. But back in 2003 when she was just 31, she was shot in the head in a drive-by shooting by a Crips gang member.

Parked up in her SUV with her boyfriend, they had inadvertently positioned the car outside of a crack house in Compton. Crips gang members guarding the house got suspicious before opening fire on the car, believing it to be connected to a rival gang.

One bullet was shot in to Price’s head, with her being pronounced dead shortly after when in hospital.

Robert Edward Maxfield, then 25, pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter the day before the third trial for Price’s killing. The first two trials had ended in a mistrial.

Serena and her family were naturally devastated by the loss, with her saying in 2004, as per PEOPLE: “She was a wonderful person. We’re dealing with it however we can. Some days are better than others.”

Those watching the Super Bowl took to social media after discovering that Serena’s sister had been killed by a Crip gang member.

Reacting to Serena then doing the famous Crip Walk on TV, one viewer said: “Serena Williams’ sister was killed by a Crip in a drive-by shooting and she had the audacity to Crip Walk during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show… indefensible.”

Another wrote: “You have the audacity to Crip Walk when your sister was killed by a Crip.”

And a third said: “Oh my God… why did I just find out Serena Williams sister was killed by Crips… she must really hate Drake cause what the f**k?”

Responding to previous suggesting the dance glamorised gang violence, sister Venus said: “It was just a dance.”

On performing at the 2025 Super Bowl, Serena’s husband Alexis Ohanian posted to Instagram saying: “Some of y’all have no idea how criticised Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago, and it shows. This is bigger than the music.”

LADbible has contacted Serena’s reps for comment.

True origin behind ‘Crip walk’ as Serena Williams does controversial dance move during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl show

This is the meaning behind Serena Williams’ crip walk dance that she performed at the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show

Last night’s Super Bowl was perhaps one of the most eventful in years.

Between Trump being the first sitting president to appear at the Super Bowl, Kendrick’s iconic halftime performance, and the Eagles trouncing the Chief’s, it was a night to remember.

While many focused on the many more obvious digs at Drake in Kendrick Lamar’s performance – such as the ‘A Minor’ line sung out by the crowd during ‘Not Like Us’ – one moment that has been much talked about is Serena Williams coming out to do a ‘crip walk’, a dance move Lamar also did during the performance.

What is a Crip walk?

The earliest videos of the dance known as a ‘Crip walk’ is from Henry ‘Crip’ Heard, a Harlem dance legend who lost an arm and a leg in a car accident.

This was later adopted by The Crips, an alliance of California street gangs who are often defined by their deadly rivalry with The Bloods.

Crip walking is an elaborate set of footwork which in many cases sees the dancer spelling out C-R-I-P with their feet.

It was originally created by Crip members to communicate with one another but, over the years, has seeped into popular culture through rappers who are closely associated with the Crips.

Why did Serena Williams Crip walk at the Super Bowl?

Williams first did the Crip walk in 2012 at Wimbledon, eliciting a massive backlash which many argued was disproportionate.

In a press conference after doing the celebratory dance, her first question was: “All people know that the crip walk is not just a dance… I was wondering, do you have any regrets doing it in front of everyone?”

Williams at the time responded strongly, saying: “First of all, it was just a dance. I didn’t know that’s what it was called.

“Second, why are you asking me that? If anything, you should be trying to ask me questions to lift me up not bring such things … I’m done with that question.”

In a video posted to X, which you can watch below, Williams went into more detail about why she crip walked during Kendrick’s performance.

Was Williams’ move shot at Drake?

Williams and Drake – the subject of Lamar’s now world-famous diss track ‘Not Like Us’ – were long rumoured to be dating.

Despite sources close to Williams insisting they were simply long-time friends, Drake has had several shots at Williams in his music.

In a 2024 video, Drake was filmed discussing his song about a one-sided romance ‘Too Good’, which he said was about ‘me and Serena’.

He also referenced the tennis legend in his 2022 track ‘Middle of the Ocean’, rapping about Williams’ husband: “Sidebar, Serena, your husband a groupie… He claim we don’t got a problem but … No, boo, it is like you coming for sushi.”

One fan said of Kendrick and Serena linking up for the performance: “he really said “say drake” and smiled straight at the camera…. and then brought out serena williams. HE’S SICK IN THE HEAD.”

Serena Williams made a cameo appearance at the Super Bowl during the halftime show, where she appeared alongside Kendrick Lamar and danced along to his music.

The tennis superstar came out doing a ‘Crip walk’, a dance made popular by Henry ‘Crip’ Heard, a Harlem dancer who lost an arm and leg in a car accident.

The dance was picked up by The Crips, a group of California street gangs, and Williams performed the dance before at Wimbledon in 2012 when she won Olympic gold which draw a significant backlash at the time.

Performing it again at the Super Bowl has rather disappointingly raised a few comments against her with some people unhappy that she was dancing along to ‘Not Like Us’, a song about Drake.

Drake has made numerous references to Serena Williams in his music, and has said that his song ‘Too Good’ was about ‘me and Serena’, and the pair are rumoured to have dated between 2011 and 2015.

Speaking after her dance at the Super Bowl she said: “Man I did not crip walk like that at Wimbledon, I would’ve been fined.”

Her husband Alexis Ohanian was ready to bat away any criticism coming her way this time, sharing screenshots of some of the things people had said about Serena in the past.

He wrote: “Some of y’all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago, and it shows… This is bigger than the music.”

Ohanian shared screenshots from a sports commentator who said that back in 2012 Williams ‘deserved to be criticised’ and tried to claim that Williams dancing at Wimbledon was ‘akin to cracking a tasteless, X-rated joke inside a church’.

He also posted a clip of Samuel L. Jackson dressed as Uncle Sam during Kendrick Lamar’s halftime show where he shouted ‘Oh no, no! Too loud! Too reckless! Too… ghetto’.

Ohanian then posted another clip from the halftime show captioned ‘meanwhile, let ’em dance’.

It seems that he’s in no mood for people’s bulls**t over his wife’s appearance at the Super Bowl and her dancing on stage.

Among the comments from viewers are that ‘Kendrick getting Serena Williams to crip walk while performing ‘Not Like Us’ is nasty work’, though others said it was ‘a wild flex by Kendrick’ to get the tennis star dancing on stage while he sung about Drake.

During his song Kendrick left out his most controversial lyric about Drake and had the Super Bowl crowd to sing it for him.

Drake has denied the allegations made against him.

Serena Williams stunned fans after doing the ‘crip walk’ on stage with Kendrick Lamar as he performed his Super Bowl halftime show.

The tennis star busted out the dance move which was created by first-generation Crip member Robert ‘Sugar Bear’ Jackson in the 70s.

She explained why she did it below:

“Man I did not crip walk like that at Wimbledon, I would’ve been fined,” Williams joked in a video she shared on social media.

Williams, who was rumoured to have dated Drake in 2011, took to the stage as Kendrick performed his diss track aimed at the Canadian rapper.

“Kendrick getting Serena williams to crip walk while performing Not Like Us is nasty work,” one viewer tweeted.

As another added: “The Serena Williams crip walk during They Not Like Us was a wild flex by Kendrick.”

On the night, however, Kendrick left out the most controversial lyric from the diss track, leaving the audience to say it for him.

“Say, Drake, I hear you like ’em young / You better not ever go to cell block one / To any b**ch that talk to him and they in love / Just make sure you hide your lil’ sister from him,” he rapped.

“They tell me Chubbs the only one that get your hand-me-downs / And Party at the party playin’ with his nose now / And Baka got a weird case, why is he around? / Certified Lover Boy? Certified (missed out ‘p**dophiles’ lyric).”

“Why you trollin’ like a b**ch? / Ain’t you tired? / Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably A-minorrrrrr,” Kendrick added on the track which has amassed over a billion streams on Spotify.

As expected, much of the crowd sang along to the record, which recently picked up multiple Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Drake has continued to deny the allegations, and responded in ‘The Heart Part 6’: “I never been with no one underage but now I understand why this the angle that you really mess with / Just for clarity, I feel disgusted, I’m too respected. If I was f**king young girls, I promise I’d a been arrested / I’m way too famous for this s**t you just suggested.”

Legal action

Drake’s legal team has filed a defamation lawsuit against his own record label Universal Music Group for releasing ‘Not Like Us’.

Without naming Kendrick in the suit, it alleges that the claims in the song were baseless and harmful to his career.

Universal, which has been Drake’s record label for over a decade, said: “Not only are these claims untrue, but the notion that we would seek to harm the reputation of any artist – let alone Drake – is illogical.”

Fans reckon they have ‘worked out’ the three-word comment Taylor Swift made when she ‘showed up on the big screen and got booed aggressively’.

The superstar singer, 35, was at the Super Bowl to support her boyfriend and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce as they took on the Philadelphia Eagles at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Swift, who has been a frequent presence at Chiefs games, was likely also there to cheer on her ‘Bad Blood’ collaborator Kendrick Lamar and his highly anticipated halftime show.

Over on X, however, NFL reporter Ari Meirov has shared a video of the reaction Swift got when she appeared on the big screen alongside Ice Spice.

“Taylor Swift got showed on the big screen and got booed aggressively,” he penned, as the musician appeared to ask “What’s going on?” when it happened.

I mean, the boos probably came from Eagles fans, finally hoping to come out on top after facing the Chiefs for the second time in three seasons.

Commenting on the clip, one person wrote: “Is she really so oblivious? The NFL fan base isn’t her fanbase. Why would people cheer for her?”

“What exactly did she do to everyone?” a fan also questioned.

LADbible has contacted representatives for Taylor Swift for comment.

This comes after Kelce, 35, welcomed the announcement earlier this week that Donald Trump would be attending the Super Bowl.

Although Trump – who became the first sitting US president to attend a Super Bowl game – previously said on Truth Social that he ‘hated’ Swift, who endorsed Kamala Harris at the presidential election.

“That’s awesome, it’s a great honour,” the NFL star said. “No matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life.

“Having the president there, it’s the best country in the world and that’s pretty cool.”

Meanwhile, Super Bowl viewers were a little divided at what happened when the camera panned to Trump during the national anthem before the game started.

When Jon Batiste was singing the American anthem, the broadcast showed Trump taking his seat in the stands and some thought he was getting booed.

“Y’all didn’t boo at Donald Trump loud enough,” one person said on X.

“That was pretty s**tty to show Trump during Jon Batiste singing the National Anthem, forced me and half of America to boo,” a second penned.

However, others couldn’t work out if it was a boo or a cheer.

Someone else said: “Did they cheer or boo Trump? Difficult to tell.”

As another echoed: “Did they boo or cheer Trump at the #SuperBowlLIX?”
